Butler, Judith. “Merely Cultural.” Social Text, n. 52/53, “Queer Transexions of Race, Nation, and Gender,” Autumn-Winter, 1997: 265-77. See also reviews listed in this bibliography by Aderinto; Kaler; Lal; Meiu; Nickels; Spurlin; White. The difficulty of understanding heterosexuality as one, particular, historically specific way of naming, conceptualizing, organizing, and constructing the sexual relationships of women and men is illustrated by this anti-essentialist author’s argument against the anti-colonialist, Africanist claim that an indigenous “homosexuality” is absent from an exclusively “heterosexual” Africa. In response Epprecht presents evidence of a variety of indigenous, changing, historically specific sexual relations between men and between women. But he continues to use “heterosexual,” “heterosexuality,” “heterosexism,” and “heteronormativity” as ahistorical, universal, essential ways of referring to the sexual relations of women and men, and the social regime that organizes them. Though Epprecht’s Heterosexual Africa is called the “History of an Idea” he does not actually study the history of heterosexuality as a historically specific idea, a particular historical way of conceiving and organizing the relations of women and men with each other. He appears not to have consulted any of the scholarly works that focus on and analyze heterosexual history. His bibliography lists only one work that touches specifically and substantially on the history of heterosexuality: Julian Carter’s The Heart of Whiteness: Normal Sexuality and Race in America, 1880-1940 (Durham, NC: Duke University Press, 2007.) It would actually support Epprecht’s argument against the idea of one, singular, essential, indigenous, ahistorical “African heterosexuality” if he did analyze and present heterosexuality as one historically particular way of constructing the sexual relations of different sexes.
